Can you please elaborate why The Thing is your favourite film please? And with detail, if possible.

It’s my favourite movie because it’s genuinely scary. The alien hides away and attacks in small, enclosed spaces instead of jumping out at every opportunity like in most other horrors and the special effects are practical. They still hold up 30 years later. It’s just the perfect horror movie.

Review | The Ward

Released January 21st 2011 | ★★★

The Ward is John Carpenter’s first feature film since the awful Ghosts of Mars in 2001 and comes in the form of a horror thriller set in a 1960’s mental institution. The Ward tells the story of a young girl who is institutionalised after burning down a house. She doesn’t know why and neither do we. Soon after she arrives she begins to notice a strange ghostly presence around the ward that seems to be killing off the other residences one by one.

As soon as the credits started to roll I was struck with the feeling that I’d seen a similar movie before. The Ward is by no means one of Carpenter’s best movies and the story isn’t the most original. But it’s thoroughly enjoyable. However, once the twist is finally revealed, you realise that some things in the movie just don’t make any sense anymore.

While well acted by the entire cast and featuring brilliant make-up effects, The Ward offers nothing new and comes with a truly terrible “final scare” ending. But this doesn’t prevent it from being a very entertaining 88 minutes indeed.
